Gono Bishwabidyalay celebrated its 28th founding anniversary through a series of colourful events. The day-long programme included a rally, scholarship distribution among meritorious and underprivileged students, documentary screenings and cultural performances.

The celebrations commenced on Saturday morning, July 11, with the release of balloons and a colourful procession marking the university’s 28th anniversary. Teachers, students and staff of the university enthusiastically participated in the event.

On the occasion of University Day 2026, the rally started from the Badamtala premises and marched through the major roads of the campus before concluding at the PHA Auditorium of Gonoshasthaya Kendra.

The event was attended by Education Minister Dr. A.N.M Ehsanul Hoque Milon as the chief guest. Special guests included Md. Tamiz Uddin, Member of Parliament from Dhaka-20 and Dr. Dewan Md. Salauddin Babu, Member of Parliament from Dhaka-19. The programme was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of Gono Bishwabidyalay, Professor Dr. Md. Abul Hossain.

The discussion session, presided over by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Abul Hossain and moderated by Dr. Md. Fuad Hossain, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, and Tania Ahmed, Assistant Professor of the Department of Pharmacy, began with remarks on behalf of the students by Yasin Al Mridul Dewan, Vice-President (VP) of the Gono University Central Students’ Union (GUCSU).

A total of 140 meritorious and financially disadvantaged students received scholarships during the ceremony. The Education Minister personally handed over scholarships to five students representing the university’s five faculties. In addition, the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Treasurer and deans of different faculties presented honorary crests to the distinguished guests.

In his speech, Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Hoque Milon recalled the contributions of the visionary founder and trustee of Gono Bishwabidyalay, the late freedom fighter Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury, and highlighted the background to the establishment of the university.

He said,

“As a university established for the common people, Gono Bishwabidyalay represents an exceptional example in Bangladesh’s higher education sector. I came here to see whether it has truly become a university for the masses. Education has now become a major global business, and in many cases the proper development of talent is being hindered by commercialisation. Therefore, greater emphasis must be placed on building a humane and quality-oriented national education framework.”

The minister further added,

“The greatest investment in a student’s life is education. Gono Bishwabidyalay has set an example by providing quality education at comparatively lower costs. While foreign students once came to Bangladesh for higher education, many Bangladeshi students are now going abroad. To reverse this trend, universities in the country must further expand international-standard education, research and technical education. Non-profit universities have a significant role to play in the country’s education sector and the government is working to strengthen these institutions in order to develop an improved education system.”

Additional speeches were delivered by special guests Dr. Dewan Md. Salauddin Babu, Member of Parliament from Dhaka-19 and Md. Tamiz Uddin, Member of Parliament from Dhaka-20.

Among those present were Shirin Haque, a member of the Gono Bishwabidyalay Trustee Board; Registrar Md. Ohiduzzaman; Treasurer Professor Md. Serajul Islam; deans of various faculties; department heads; administrative officials and staff of Gono Bishwabidyalay and Gonoshasthaya Kendra; teachers, students and leaders of GUCSU.

The event concluded with a vibrant cultural programme.

Although Gono Bishwabidyalay was established on July 14, 1998, the university observed its 28th founding anniversary on Saturday with various programmes.
